The Power of Color!


We love color, don’t we? Rich, vibrant colors and complex, subtle colors. They can make your painting sing… or fall flat. So, how can you explore your use of color without making mud or a colorful mess? There are a lot of tricks and strategies you can learn that will allow you to play with your color palette without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

Learn about color mixing and color theory to help you choose an expressive color palette that works. Learn how to create emphasis through color and how color can change the feeling within your artwork. Harness the power of color!

Meets: (4) Thursdays 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Dates: Jan. 20 & 27 Feb. 3 & 10 in 2022
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Lisa Larrabee
Format: Lecture & demonstration, studio practice with individual feedback or one-on-one instruction.
Level: Beginner to intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Oil paint, acrylic, watercolors, and pastels or pastel pencils are all welcome!
Technique: Color mixing and color theory, color substitutions, and value matching
Materials The instructor will email the materials list prior to the first day of class. Note that painters must use drop cloths over tabletops, oil painters are specifically required to use Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits & dispose of their oily rags in a flammable waste can.

Light and shadow work together to create complex tonal relationships, which are required to help us make sense of what we see in the world around us. Learn how to break down the anatomy of light and shadow with simple steps that will assist you in creating the illusion of volume in your drawings. Explore techniques and tools that will also help you translate your observations onto paper in a realistic manner, or use this class as a refresher to practice your drawing skills within a studio environment.

Meets: (4) Saturdays, 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM (3-hour duration)
Dates: Jan. 8, 15, 22 & 29 in 2022
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Jill Bauman
Format: Demonstration, lecture, and, plenty of individual attention or feedback from your instructor, during hands-on studio practice.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Medium: Colored pencils, water-soluble colored pencils, graphite, or any 2D drawing medium is also welcome.
Techniques: Specific to drawing with an introduction to water-soluble colored pencils techniques for stunning effects in shadow areas.
Materials: The instructor will email a list prior to the first day of class, some supplies will be available for exploration.
