Creating collage is fun! It’s an easy and accessible way to express yourself with color, marks, papers, or any common supplies or materials on hand. In this class, you will create a no-sew handmade journal and unique collage papers, and then use your creations to develop one-of-a-kind collages in your journal.

Demonstrations will include a variety of techniques, such as monotype printing, gel plate printing, mark-making, collage design, how to embellish your collage, using supplies you have on hand, and how to create your unique collage papers.

Meets: (2) Mondays 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Dates: Nov. 29 & Dec. 6 in 2021
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Michele Vaughan
Format: Demonstration, lecture, & one-on-one instruction provided during hands-on practice.
Level: No experience necessary, absolute beginner, beginner to intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Mixed Media, most all mediums are welcome
Technique: Collage, mark-making, monotype prints with a Gel plate and wax paper plate, creating a no-sew journal.
Materials: The instructor will email a materials list before the first day of class. Most items will be things you have on hand. You may want to purchase high-quality printing paper (e.g. Arches Text Wove works well) but it’s not imperative. Some supplies & materials are available on-site for experimentation.

Explore the fascinating unbounded rich medium of encaustic! Create luminous encaustic bound collages with an expert guide. Add in paper shapes or strips, solid or printed tissue, hair, or thread. Learn how to use lightweight porous papers as a base and how to bond your collage to soft support. Discover encaustic paints, image transfers, and post-collage sewing. Walk away with a self-generated resource guide and a beautifully finished piece!

Meets: (2) days Saturday & Sunday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (6-hour duration) (1-hour lunch break will be scheduled each day)
Dates: Nov. 13 & 14 in 2021
Location: Private Studio in Tucson, Arizona 85719, (Directions will be emailed by the instructor prior to the first day of class)

Instructor: Sherrie Posternak
Format: Demonstration, lecture, & one-on-one instruction provided during hands-on practice.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Encaustic
Technique: Specific to encaustic, using mixed media & collage, bonding to soft supports, post-collage sewing as both a linear element or as an attachment to other mediums.
Materials: Please wear closed-toed shoes and an apron, while working in the studio. Includes the use of all encaustic equipment, tools, & consumable materials. Bring notepaper, pen, pencil, or something to take notes on, several different sized hand-sewing needles, including one large enough for upholstery thread or waxed polyester, a pair of scissors, an X-Acto knife with a sharp blade, and any extra lightweight papers or tissues that you’d like to use.

Express your love for animals. Honor your beloved pet, domestic, or favorite wild animal with a portrait in watercolor! This fun and exciting class will cover all the steps from start to finish, including excellent guidance and demonstration. Learn how to select the best materials and choose a great reference photograph to work from. Discover new color mixing techniques and find answers to the ever-present question of how to treat the background. You will also learn how to create animal fur and texture. By the end of this class, you will be empowered to paint your favorite animals with confidence!


Meets: (3) Saturdays, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM (3-hour duration)

Painting Essentials: Expressive Brushwork


Do you want to loosen up and achieve an expressive quality in your paintings? It may be trickier than it looks. In this class, we will begin with monochromatic sketches in paint so you can focus on brush control and expressive mark-making. We’ll make each brushstroke count! We will also discuss strategies to prepare your palette and focus on developing general shapes, values, and colors as a whole Your painting will soon feel “complete” at various stages, an essential skill for artists working under time constraints, like when painting from a live model or working to capture the light and shadow cast from the moving sun.

Meets: (4) Mondays 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Dates: Nov. 1, 8, 15 &in 2021
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Lisa Larrabee
Format: Lecture & demonstration, studio practice with individual feedback or one-on-one instruction.
Level: Beginner to intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Oil paint (primary for demo), acrylic, or water-based oils are all welcome!
Technique: Expressive brushwork, working from general to specific
Materials The instructor will email the materials list prior to the first day of class. Note that all painters must use drop cloths over tabletops. Oil painters are required to use Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits at all times & dispose of their rags in the red can marked for safe disposal of solvent-soaked materials.
