Introduction to Encaustic


Explore the fascinating unbounded rich medium of encaustic with a comprehensive introduction! Discover techniques from the history of this ancient medium that date back thousands of years. Create luminous paintings, using melted pigmented beeswax while you learn the simple steps to get started using an inexpensive setup and minimal equipment. If you’ve ever been curious, this workshop is for you. No materials are needed, absolute beginners with no experience are welcome!

Demonstrations will include texture, substrates, grounds surface techniques, collage, mixed media, and 3-D applications with plenty of individual one on one instruction. Use of all equipment, tools and some consumable materials will be included.
Meets: (2) Days on Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM (1-hour lunch break each day)
Dates: Dec. 14 & 15 in 2019
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Instructor: Sherrie Posternak
Format: Demonstration, lecture, & one-on-one instruction provided during hands-on practice. Maximum enrollment is 8.
Level: Absolute Beginner, Beginner, or Intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Encaustic
Technique: Texture, substrates, grounds surface, collage, mixed media, and 3-D applications
Materials: Includes all use of encaustic equipment, tools, & all consumable materials. Bring notepaper, pen, pencil, or something to take notes on. Several images of your favorite artist's work, an image of any of your own favorite artwork (to share your artistic sensibility). Wear or bring an apron and closed-toed shoes to work in the studio.

Explore the fascinating unbounded rich medium of encaustic! Create luminous encaustic bound collages with an expert guide. Add in paper shapes or strips, solid or printed tissue, hair, or thread. Learn how to use lightweight porous papers as a base and how to bond your collage to soft support. Discover encaustic paints, image transfers, and post-collage sewing. Walk away with a self-generated resource guide and a beautifully finished piece!

Meets: (2) days Saturday & Sunday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (6-hour duration) (1-hour lunch break will be scheduled each day)

Medium: Encaustic
Technique: Specific to encaustic, using mixed media & collage, bonding to soft supports, post-collage sewing as both a linear element or as an attachment to other mediums
Materials: Please wear closed-toed shoes and an apron, while working in the studio. Class includes the use of all encaustic equipment, tools, & consumable materials. Bring notepaper, pen, or pencil, several different sized hand-sewing needles, including one large enough for upholstery thread or waxed polyester, a pair of scissors, an X-Acto knife with a sharp blade, and any extra lightweight papers or tissues that you’d like to use.

Ideal for anyone painting in oils, who would like to practice within a studio setting and learn from live demonstrations. Topics will include painting from outdoor sketches, creating compositions, and the pitfalls of reference photography. Demonstrations will focus on how to use the building blocks of shapes, values, edges, and colors to improve your landscape paintings.

This class is open to those who have a basic understanding of how to mix color or have some prior knowledge of oil painting tools & supplies.

Meets: (4) Sunday Mornings, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM (3-hour duration)
Dates: Nov. 17, 24, Dec. 8, 15 in 2019
Location: TPS Art Center (2447 N. Los Altos, Tucson, Arizona 85705)

Format: Lecture & demonstration. Individual feedback and one-on-one instruction will be provided.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate, all levels are welcome!

Medium: Oil Painting
Technique: Painting in oils with a wide range of artistic styles from realism to abstraction. Students are encouraged to bring in their own reference photographs to use for practice.
Materials: The instructor will email the materials list prior to the first day of class. Note: During each session, please use Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits and dispose of oily or solvent-soaked rags into the red non-flammable marked containers.

It will take you through the basics of color mixing, warm tones, cool tones, and complimentary colors. Create your own color references, paint different color combinations with certain themes in mind and create your very own abstract painting using intuitive color mixing.
