Drawing the Human Figure


Learn how to draw the human figure? Yes! Many see it as a life-long endeavor to improve skills or as a path to learn drawing. Figure or ‘life drawing’ as it's often called is the process of drawing the human figure within a studio environment. In this class, we will draw from a live model (not using photography). Models will be nude or in a swimsuit.

This class is open to all levels from beginners to intermediate. Individual attention will be emphasized as we cover simple steps to get you started. The first 2 sessions lectures & demonstrations will focus on gesture, a process for laying in the pose of the model or line of action. Typical gesture practice includes a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time in as little as 2 minutes, or as long as 10 minutes. The last 2 sessions will focus on longer poses with demonstrations on structure and mass.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Medium: All drawing mediums are welcome, demonstrations will be performed in charcoal or graphite.
Technique: Gesture Drawing and Human Structural Forms
Materials: Large drawing paper at least 14x17 or larger, charcoal or graphite pencil, and kneadable eraser. All other materials will be provided.

Learn how to draw? Yes! Develop the ability to translate what you see onto paper in a realistic manner, using a range of approaches. Practice with an assortment of natural forms as you discover a wide variety of tools and techniques. This class is open to all levels from beginners to advanced. Individual attention will be emphasized as we cover simple steps to get you started. Many see drawing as a life-long endeavor to improve skills or maybe you just need a refresher to “return” to the skills you let sit over time. Sessions will comprise lectures, demonstrations, and studio exercises. Each session will focus on a different technique and subject. Learn how to approach this traditional media creatively and tune into the process of observation and drawing from life!

This class will teach you how to make objects sit in a believable three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface, paper, or canvas. Within a few easy steps, you will be drawing or painting buildings, cars, interiors, books, bridges, or any structure that recedes into space.

Do you miss practicing with other artists in a warm, welcoming studio environment? Sometimes it takes a village to find encouragement, support, or inspiration! Social learning is also an effective way to develop or hone your skills! Through the exchange of new ideas, sharing tips, ongoing social interactions, enduring relationships, or meaningful connections, it's the glue that makes the knowledge stick.

Village art practice allows face-to-face contact, the free flow of ideas & a place where individuals can cultivate together. Draw or paint in any 2D medium of your choice, working on self-directed projects or bring in a reference photo. A moderator will be present to answer questions, provide individual feedback, or perform short requested demonstrations. You may also bring in any work previously completed for feedback.
