Design and Composition: Notan

Design and Composition: Notan

Design and Composition: Notan

Design and composition are the building blocks of the visual arts. Whether you are drawing or painting, a strong composition will attract attention, engage and provide clarity in your message to the viewer. This class will cover some of the basic principles of art, simplification, and the Japanese concept of Nōtan (濃淡), which evolved during the making of woodblock prints using a limited set of dark and light shapes. Taught on location in the classroom at the beautiful Yume Japanese Gardens, by the end of this class, you will have a solid understanding of how to simplify your shapes and arrange your values into a pleasing design.
